TEHRAN Majlis Speaker Hojjatoleslam Mahdi Karrubi said on Monday that Iran lies in a natural disaster-prone region and the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) is expected to dispatch relief workers to any part of the country hit by floods, quake or other natural disasters.
In a meeting with the IRCS officials, the Majlis speaker said the Islamic Republic of Iran, in light of the cultural and humanitarian requirements, sees itself responsible to send aid workers to the other parts of the world, too.
He called for supporting the IRCS through providing the relief body with financial needs and equipment and urged the other state organizations to hand over the equipment they have borrowed from the IRCS to enable the relief body to fulfill its duty in cases of emergency.
Karrubi also called for publicity to attract public assistance for the IRCS and said that since Iran is a large country, the fund provided by the government will not be enough to help the IRCS carry out its relief missions.
The Majlis speaker referred to the large number of unemployed youth and called on the IRCS to launch training programs for relief operations and other social and cultural programs to prepare the ground for constructive cooperation of the youth with the relief body.
He said the youth are big asset for the country and the IRCS would help employ the youth in social, cultural, economic and political activities to help them develop their abilities.
Karrubi also recommended that the relief body put its relief teams on alert and embark on wide scale training programs so that the people should be delivered relief aid in case of any natural disaster.
The IRCS President Dr. Nourbala offered a report on the bottlenecks hindering the implementation of IRCS's programs and asked the Majlis to provide more fund to the relief body.
